LEAN at KAEFER

Creating value through LEAN

At KAEFER South Africa, LEAN means doing the right things in the right way. Building on more than a decade of KAEFER Group experience, our local teams apply LEAN across projects and workshops.

By improving flow, reducing waste and learning continuously, we support safer delivery, higher quality and more efficient use of time, materials and resources.

“LEAN isn't about rigid checkboxes; it's about empowering the person closest to the work to eliminate waste and make their task safer and more efficient every day.”

Jayson Cleaver, Managing Director, KAEFER South Africa

Three principles guide our work

Our LEAN approach is built around three principles:

  • True North: Get it right the first time by focusing on quality, safety and efficiency from planning through to handover.
  • Zero Waste: Design every step to reduce unnecessary time, effort, movement and material waste.
  • Empowered teams: The people closest to the work identify opportunities, solve problems and help drive sustainable improvements.

Improvement starts where the work happens

A practical LEAN approach can help clients achieve safer delivery, higher quality, smoother workflows, clearer communication and more efficient use of resources. At KAEFER South Africa, LEAN is adapted to each project’s requirements, risks and schedule. Typical applications include:

  • Access and scaffolding: Visual planning, standard work and 5S to improve productivity and reduce rework
  • Insulation and surface protection: Kitting, takt planning and quality at the source to reduce waiting and rework
  • Passive fire protection: Standardised installation sequences and checks to support right-first-time delivery
  • Turnarounds and outages: Pull planning, daily management and constraint removal to protect critical paths
  • Prefabrication and logistics: Improved flow, layout and material control to reduce travel, movement and inventory

Our leaders go to the Gemba, the place where value is created. By spending time on projects and in Three different KAEFER LEAN Development Programme badges: Lean Practitioner, Lean Professional, Lean Masterworkshops, they observe processes, coach teams and help remove obstacles.

Through the KAEFER LEAN Development Programme, local teams are trained and supported by Practitioners, Professionals, Masters and on-site coaches. This helps standardise effective ways of working while leaving space for local improvements.
